EPA's New Source Performance Standards(NSPS)

The EPA's New Source Performance Standards(NSPS) is the program that regulates emissions for wood burning Stoves, Fireplaces and Fireplace Inserts. The original NSPS better known as EPA Phase II, started on July 1st, 1990. A Phase II certified stove with a catalytic could produce no more than 4.5 grams/hr of pollution, and a Phase II certified stove without a catalytic could produce no more than 7.5 grams/hr of pollution.

Now, almost 30 years later, the EPA has updated their NSPS to reflect advancements in technology. First in 2015, the EPA regulations on wood burning appliances implemented that all regulated wood burning appliances manufactured in, or imported to the United States, must produce no more than 4.5 grams/hr of pollution. In the new standards, there is no difference between a stove with a catalytic and one without. In May of 2020, all regulated wood burning appliances will be required to produce no more than 2.5 grams/hr of pollution.

Many of our stove manufacturers have improved their combustion technologies over the years, and now some of the new designs have certified emissions levals as low as 0.5 g/h, surpassing the 2020 requirements.

Below is a current list of the stoves we carry that already meet the EPA 2020 emissions limits, with more coming soon!
