Vermont Castings

There is a special place in the Northeast – a place where trees burst into a blazing flame of orange, red and yellow as soon as there appears the first slight chill in the air. It’s the same place where soft white snow will blanket the old covered bridges and dust the ground with the fairytale glint seen in postcards from times past. Here, people gather to enjoy the warmth of friendship and fire. They gather to tell stories and rekindle acquaintances somehow spread thin over the summer.  Here, the warmest seasons of the year are the ones spent around hearth and home. This special place is Vermont - and at its heart, is the foundry. This foundry is where the hand-crafted heritage of Vermont Castings was born.

For more than a quarter of a century Vermont Castings has been creating handcrafted cast iron stoves and fireplaces. From the recycled cast iron we collect to the beautiful paint and enamel finishing we apply, each Vermont Castings product is produced with precision, attention to detail and a deep-rooted pride in our heritage and craft. In fact, our foundry is like a family and many of the people at the foundry have been there as long as Vermont Castings has been around. Their innate understanding and appreciation of the warmth and beauty of fire is captured in the products they make, and their desire to keep people warm is what makes our foundry different.

Whether it’s a stove, fireplace or grill, Vermont Castings offers a line of products that has not only passed the rigorous testing of our labs and governing industry standards – but also the test of time. The cast iron construction and attention to detail each product receives ensures that your Vermont Castings will provide continuous optimum performance for many years to come. Our focus isn’t only on our heritage, however. Ensuring that today’s newest technologies and environmental concerns are addressed in the design and function of each of our products is an important focus for us as well. In fact, seven out of the top twelve efficient stoves in the world are made by Vermont Castings. Green is our state color after all.

We have the products you're looking for. Vermont Castings offers a mix of heating appliances and outdoor grills - providing you a range of styles, finishes, sizes, heating capacities, fuel sources and accessories from which to choose. Whether you’re looking for a stove, insert, fireplace or grill and want natural gas, propane, wood or coal as your fuel source, Vermont Castings has exactly what you’re looking for.

We offer traditional style with contemporary comfort.  The beauty of heritage cast iron style is apparent in each stove, fireplace and insert we cast. Complete with the detailing and handcraftsmanship you’d expect from a heritage piece, each Vermont Castings is finished with pride, precision and the attention to detail that is often lacking in many of today’s products and services. Our engineers and other specialist technicians work hard to develop industry-leading technologies that make Vermont Castings one of the most advanced lines of hearth appliances available. Whether it’s our new 2N1 wood stove technology or our top-ranked “green” products, Vermont Castings provides you with the traditional style you want without compromising on contemporary comforts.

Green is at the core of what we do.  Traditional beauty isn’t our only feature. Ensuring that today’s newest technologies and environmental concerns are addressed in the design and function of each of our products is an important focus for us as well. In fact, six out of the top ten cleanest wood burning stoves in the world are made by Vermont Castings. We also have the highest rated EPA wood stove and the highest rated catalytic and non-catalytic stoves in the industry.  Our cast iron comes from 100% recycled cast iron found in reclaimed items such as automotive brake drums and rotors, and other larger, recycled cast iron pieces – including Vermont Castings rejected cast pieces and scrap.  Our foundry runs on 70% hydro power – a renewable and clean resource and 30% nuclear power – also a clean resource, and our casting process uses environmentally friendly natural sand and clay to bond the molds together rather than an artificial polymer, and the natural sand and clay is used again and again.

Save money and energy with a Vermont Castings product. Our products are green in more ways than one. While we are extremely proud of our commitment to environmental responsibility, we’ve also engineered our products to save you energy and consequently some of your own “green”—money. By adding a Vermont Castings product to the room(s) where you spend the most time, you can save money during the winter months by zone heating—turning down your home’s thermostat and heating only the room(s) you use most with your stove or fireplace.

Our products pass the test of time. Each of our products not only passes the rigorous testing of our labs and governing industry standards – but also the test of time. The cast iron construction and attention to detail each product receives ensures that your Vermont Castings will provide continuous optimum performance for many years to come.

Our stoves are proudly made in the USA. Vermont Castings proud heritage dates back 35 years and we have been manufacturing our stoves in the USA the all of these years. With one of the few remaining foundries in the US, just a few miles down the road from our plant in Bethel, VT, Vermont Castings is proud to support our economic and environmental welfare.

When to choose an insert – Inserts are available in both gas and wood burning styles. A fireplace insert is a convenient and affordable way to convert an existing masonry wood burning fireplace to natural gas or to a more efficient wood burning one. Inserts fit into your existing fireplace opening and use the existing chimney. To determine the size you will need, measure the opening of your existing fireplace - (width x height x depth) and visit a dealer near you to select the right product for your home.

When to choose direct vent – Direct vent fireplaces are available in gas only. They are the perfect solution for homes that don’t have an existing chimney. Direct vent fireplaces offer the opportunity to place a fireplace in just about any room – provided venting can be run to an outside wall or through the roof (maximum venting distances apply).  Venting terminations will appear on the outside wall or roof, so this is an aesthetic consideration for your home’s exterior. Visit a dealer near you to select the right product, cabinet and accessories for your décor and heating requirements.

When to choose a stove – Freestanding stoves are available in wood, gas and coal models and add an air of stylish tradition to any room. Handcrafted from cast iron, Vermont Castings stoves are environmentally friendly and efficient. With multiple venting options available, today’s stoves can go virtually anywhere in your house. Our new 2N1 wood stoves offer you the best of both a catalytic and non-catalytic stove, all in one stylish, efficient appliance. Available in a variety of enamel colors, sizes and styles, visit a dealer near you to find the perfect Vermont Castings for your home.

When to choose a vent free appliance – Vent free products are available in gas only. Offered in both stove and fireplaces styles, and with no venting required, they can be installed just about anywhere. Stylish and efficient, vent free products add heat and ambience with little hassle or expense. Consult your local Vermont Castings hearth dealer to determine if a vent free product is right for you. (Vent free products are not available in Canada and some US states.)

Catalytic
A higher efficiency heating machine, catalytic wood stoves are ideal for those who wish to supplant a major portion of their heating needs with their wood stove.

• Higher efficiency
• Longer burn times
• Advanced features such as top-loading, swing-out ash pan and thermostatic control

  1. Primary air enters the stove through a thermostatically controlled flap in the back and is preheated as it is drawn through the interior walls of the stove and finally to the air wash.
  2. Thermostatically controlled secondary air mixes with the smoke (which is unburned wood gases) beginning the secondary combustion process and providing an optional mixture for greater efficiency.
  3. The mixture passes through a catalytic combustor which lowers the smoke’s burning temperature from 1,200 ºF to 600 ºF and causes it to ignite. This
    catalytic combustion turns the smoke
and other pollutants into usable heat.

Non-Catalytic

Homeowners will save money and time with a non-catalytic model. Easier to start and operate, the non-catalytic wood stove is ideal for those with less heating demands on their wood stoves.

• Slightly lower cost
• Lively flame picture
• No catalytic combustor
• Easier to operate

  1. Primary combustion air enters the stove and is preheated then introduced above the glass doors. This primary air flow is adjustable and provides control of fuel burn rate and heat output. The sweeping action of the airwash system helps keep the glass clean for better view of the fire.
  2. Jets of combustion air enter through the shoe refractory and maintain a superheated primary combustion zone of coals and burning fuel where combustible gasses ignite as they pass into the secondary combustion zone.
  3. Flames entering the highly insulated secondary combustion chamber are further mixed with staged secondary combustion air which provides the optimum level of oxygen to more completely burn off any remaining combustible gasses. This results in lower emissions, higher efficiency and a stable,
even heat output from your stove.
